(JP-wb) — Young Peruvian chess player Emilio Córdova (15), whose story caught the attention of the Peruvian media, arrived at Lima’s Jorge Chavez airport Monday morning on a flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil. According to his father, Emilio fell in love with a Brazilian woman who is almost twice his age, and he threatened to run away if someone intended to interfere with his relationship.
A local radio station reported that he was greeted at the airport by a special escort from his school. Harassed by journalists, Emilio left the airport accompanied by his parents.
Emilio, third in Peru’s national chess rankings, said in Sao Paulo that he hadn’t eaten for three days, that he was sick and desperately needed money to check into a hospital.
Emilio was so enamored by his girlfriend that he said “I’d rather prefer to die here in a hospital than having to return home. I have pride”. Emilio said he was suffering from severe headaches and stomach problems.
“I have asked my dad to send me some cash but he refused. He just wants me to go home but I don’t want to”, he said last week.
“I am going through a difficult stage of my life which happens sometimes. One of the reasons why I want to stay here is my fiancee but I also enjoy my freedom here. Here I can be myself”, he told a local newspaper.
Nevertheless, a couple of days ago, his father, Arturo Córdova, flew to Sao Paulo trying to convince him to come home to Peru. Apparently he was successful in his mission. In its weekly news show “Reporte Semanal”, Peruvian TV channel Frecuencia Latina revealed that Adriane Oliveira (29), who Emilio calls his fiancee, works in a Sao Paulo night club where prostitution is part of the business.
The news report also showed images of Emilio in Sao Paulo’s red light district.

In a brief press conference, Emilio blamed his father for exposing his private life to the mass media and that he was wrong to forcing him to come home, although he understands that his father acted out of love for his son.
Emilio said that this experience has not changed his feelings for his father and denied that you would be resentful. He also added that he has no regrets.
Emilio said he hopes that the press will give him just as much attention during his next professional chess matches.

Controversies like this one helps in the development of the game of chess. I just hope that during tournaments the same publicity shall be made.
