Eighty-seven years before our ancestors founded in North America a new country thought of in freedom and based on the principle that all people are born with the same rights.

Our ancestors thought of freedom when they founded a new country in North America eighty-seven years ago. The term paraphrase is sometimes used in discussions of translations sometimes equating it with loose translations that change or distort the historical meaning of the text. As is the case with the term literal we need to use words that actually mean what we say they mean.

Your own rendition of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else presented in a new form. One legitimate way when accompanied by accurate documentation to borrow from a source. A more detailed restatement than a summary which focuses concisely on a single main idea.

A paraphrase is a restatement of a text in another form or other words often to simplify or clarify meaning. When you paraphrase says Brenda Spatt you retain everything about the original writing but the words. Even the most literal translations necessarily provide aids to the reader in the translation because certain concepts in the original languages would be nonsensical to most English readers.

Likewise even those Bibles that tend more toward the paraphrase side of things are often quite literal for passages where the literal rendering. A paraphrase may be interesting to use from time to time to see how a particular translator might summarize or reword the sacred text for everyday speech but outside of a textual comparison with more studious translations the paraphrase should be discarded at least where methodological Bible study is concerned. While a translation attempts to tell the reader what the original text says a paraphrase attempts to tell the reader what the passage means.

Therefore a paraphrase is more of a commentary on the text of Scripture than it is an accurate rendering of what the text actually says. Within popular Bible translation theory and method it is perhaps the most widely perpetuated myth namely the artificial categorization of translation philosophy according to a degree of literalness by creating a polarized literal-to-paraphrase diagram with interlinear at one extreme and free paraphrase at the other extreme. The most literal translation would be an interlinear Bible which has the text in its original language with the English equivalent under or beside the text.

On the other end of the spectrum is the thought-by-thought translation. We know it as a paraphrase. Bible scholars like to call it a functional equivalent.

A paraphrased poem is a literal translation in regular prose without rhyme or meter. Create a Literal Translation Read the entire poem once or twice to get a broad understanding of the storyline characters and setting. Then break the poem down word-by-word phrase-by-phrase or line-by-line to paraphrase.

A paraphrase rewords the Bible into plain or modern language. It is the authors interpretation of Gods Word using imagination and literary skill rather than an actual translation of the biblical text. A popular paraphrase is Eugene Petersons The Message.

Literal translation direct translation or word-for-word translation is a translation of a text done by translating each word separately without looking at how the words are used together in a phrase or sentence. In translation theory another term for literal translation is metaphrase and for phrasal sense translation paraphrase. A paraphrase is similar to a summary because you are rewriting the source in your own words.

They key difference is that paraphrases include both key points and subpoints. Because a paraphrase includes detailed information it can sometimes be as long if not longer than the original source. Paraphrase involves starting and staying with the same language.

To paraphrase means to restate the meaning of a text using using different words in the same language. If I were to paraphrase Thoreaus famous line. The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation I might say Most people endure lifes frustrations calmly and peacefully.

A paraphrase ˈpærəfreɪz is a restatement of the meaning of a text or passage using other words So far we can say paraphrasing is the use of different words to restate a text to achieve clearer meaning Paraphrasing is to use your own words to retain the original idea. Occasionally paraphrase is necessary because no corresponding English expression exists. This is true for idioms figures of speech and unusual syntax.

Though the literal method must use paraphrase in these cases care is taken to convey the exact meaning without unnecessary interpretation. Literal paraphrase may have to be quite long-winded in order to express the metaphorical utterances non-literal content but that doesnt prevent it from being adequate. Unavailability of a short pithy literal paraphrase should not be confused with unavailability of a literal paraphrase tout court.
